Help for Ms.Carolyn's Family!

Ladies:

Carolyn Holder’s family suffered a terrible tragedy yesterday. Her sister’s apartment caught on fire and her 5 year old niece died. The family has lost everything. As most of you know, Carolyn has run the NYO program at St Joan of Arc for many years and has lovingly cared for many of our children. What ever the St. Joan of Arc community can do to help this family would be greatly appreciated.

Please consider financial donations to help cover the funeral expenses and donations of clothing for the family. They need clothes for Carolyn’s sister, 17 year old niece and her 4 month old daughter. Women’s clothing size 18 and 14, and infant clothing size 3 - 6 months would be very helpful. Later they will need household items.

Please contact Kelly Mosley at 283-9191 or 557-8051 if you would like to donate anything. Also, please keep Carolyn’s family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you,

Margaret Graves

Child dies in Lawrence Township fire

Chris Proffitt/Eyewitness News
Lawrence - Family members are mourning the loss of a five-year-old girl after fire tore through their house. But they're also praising neighbors after the dramatic rescue of a four-month-old child who was sleeping in the same home.
The fire broke out around midnight at the Cottages of Fall Creek near 56th Street just west of I-465.
The girl awoke just after midnight in her family's apartment to warn her sleeping mother of the fire. Within a matter of minutes, she was found dead by firefighters after hiding in a bathtub.
Four others in the apartment managed to escape.
"I'm so full of pain for her. It's one thing to lose your apartment - but to lose a child, there's just no words," said Regina Hollingsworth, neighbor.
The child's mother suffered second-degree burns from a fire that investigators believe was electrical and near a computer. Firefighters say an initial search for the child was hampered by the cluttered apartment.
The woman's 16-year-old daughter and her four-month-old baby were also in the apartment. Neighbors say the teenage girl, desperate and trapped upstairs, threw the baby out the window to a neighbor waiting below. Suffering burns to her arms and back, she then jumped to safety.
"Can you imagine that mother's fear to throw that four-month-old baby down the window to some people down below. I think they did catch her, certainly broke that child's fall. And then she jumped herself. Those actions certainly saved her own life and that infant's," said Lawrence Township Deputy Fire Chief Dick Groves.
The girl and her baby also suffered smoke inhalation in a tragedy that one neighbor said could have been prevented.
Fire investigators are still trying to determine whether the apartment had a working smoke detector.

Meals Needed!

Good Morning! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather. Our Pastoral Council President, Connie Gigax, recently had a knee replacement. She and her friend Penny Handshaw (also a parishioner) are also caring for her 97 year old mother who is just about housebound. If anyone can help bring a few meals over the next few weeks it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Karen Roberson

"One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anyone."

Vernell Hart is a St. Joan of Arc parishoner who would give anything to be a part of Mary's Circle. However, she has no computer, so she would never receive one of the e-mails or be able to check the blog. And she cannot leave the confines of her bed, so she could never make it to one of our gatherings. As such, she needs us, and she needs us to come to her.
You may have heard Joe Foster speak at mass last year around this time, describing Vernell, her recent conversion to Catholicism, her struggles with polio, and her amazing spirit. She lives just east of College, on 42nd Street... so close to all of us, but unable to fully participate in and enjoy our community.
My kids and I began visiting Vernell last year, and those visits have been such a gift and blessing for us, just as seeing the kids' antics and having a friend to talk to have comforted her.
I know it would be awkward to enter a stranger's house and introduce yourself, so I'm organizing a weekly visiting schedule -- an ongoing Mary's Circle field trip -- to see Vernell. I'm asking you to search your heart and clear your schedule, and join me even once in going and sitting with her. We will only stay 30 minutes. Those of you who know me will feel assured that there will be no lull in the conversation. We'll just talk, maybe read a little inspirational something, and you can tell her about your life and share hers. It doesn't matter what you say, only that you go. If it's a morning trip, some of my kids will be with me, so feel free to bring yours. My kids talk about her almost every day and love going to see her. (She has a candy bowl, so that helps... but they're really in it for all the praise and adoration she sends in their direction. She's also a captive audience, so they perform all their songs and tricks for her.)
The visits will be on Wednesdays, alternating between a morning and an evening trip, so I hope one of the dates/times will work for you. Please contact me at lbradshaw37@yahoo.com and let me know when you'd like to visit her, as well as giving me your phone number so I can call to remind you and we can arrange the details. If you're on the fence or just want to learn more (or miss me and would like to chat), feel free to call me at 926-1637.
10 AM visits - All Wednesdays: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, August 12, August 26, September 9, September 23, October 7, October 21
8 PM visits - All Wednesdays: June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5, August 19, September 2, September 16, September 30, October 14, October 28
Mother Theresa said that "One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anyone." In Vernell's case, her polio is a terrible cross to bear, but her loneliness makes it even harder. She doesn't need Mother Theresa to come sit with her... she only needs you.

Let's Finish The School Grounds!

If you are able to help finish up the gardening and pavers, please meet us at SJOA school on:

Tuesday, June 16th
6-9PM
Refreshments served and children watched
Set sign, and pavers, do some planting etc.

Thanks!

Babies Galore!

We had a great time at babies and bagels today. What a turnout! I am amazed at the number of new babies in the past month. Among us were 3 newborns, several toddlers, grandparents, and mothers. We are quite a sight when we all get together. It's great to know our community is growing and we still have time to get together and play. Thanks again to Melinda for getting us out of the house and feeding us. This is a wonderful group for fun, support, and a little out of the house time.

NCC FREE TREE DAY, APRIL 25, 2009

Nora-Northside Community Council, Inc. (NCC) again celebrates Arbor Day by purchasing and giving four hundred native to Indiana American cranberry trees to the public. The free trees will be available Saturday (April 25) from 9 a.m. until noon, but only as long as the supply lasts. The distribution site is at 9245 North Meridian St.This is the twentieth year for NCC's tree event; and at the completion of this year's event, a total of almost 9500 free trees will have been given to the public through those years. Those who pay 2009 NCC membership dues on tree day will receive an extra gift. The American cranberry tree is actually a very large shrub which matures at 8 to 12 feet and provides three seasons of interest. White flower clusters bloom in late spring. Dark green leaves turn wine-red in fall, and the plant's clusters of red berries, which ripen in September, provide edible fruit for birds and wildlife. (Early Americans stewed the berries with sugar into a cranberry -sauce as a source of Vitamin C.) The plant is useful as a hedge, back-ground or border plant and will grow in partial shade. Each plant will have been hand-wrapped by NCC Board members in wet newsprint and placed in a plastic bag to help it survive until planted. (Roots must be kept damp until planting.) Instructions for planting will be included with the tree.

Lilly Day Of Service Volunteers!

Hi Ladies,
I am in need of a little help if possible. I need to recruit some volunteers for the Lilly day of Service to install the benches for the play ground and to work on the brick pavers and totem poles, I am hoping these could be people who helped with the playground so they would know what to do. Could you help me solicit these people?

Also, good news, we will be having a special art exhibit at the “World’s Smallest Art Gallery” in Carmel the last week of May and the first week of June. This place is in the Guinness book of world records and gets a lot of publicity. The problem is that we have to man the gallery ourselves. I need to get some volunteers for a couple of times any thoughts?

Meals!

I realize that there are a lot of requests for donations coming through currently and hope everyone has had a chance to fill a need this month, but I wanted to remind everyone that we have a couple people who could still use a little help if there are any more cooks out there. Laura Dill recently had surgery and will be off her feet for a bit, and the O'Conner's had a baby girl. Anything will be helpful to either family. Karen is out of town for the week, so if you have a donation please e mail me to let me know and to gather information for delivery.

Monsignor Busald Volunteer Service Award

Hey everyone - Just wanted to let you know that I received word that SJA's Paula Hartzer was selected by CYO to receive its prestigious Monsignor Busald volunteer service award this year. This is to honor Paula's many years of service to the youth and athletic programs at SJA. It's also a neat thing for SJA when one of our own is recognized for their contributions to the youth of our parish and school. I'm sure that many of you know Paula, but for those that don't, I can tell you that she was a tireless and dedicated supporter of the youth and athletic activities at SJA. Her award is very much deserved!

If you get the opportunity, please take a moment to congratulate Paula on this accomplishment. The actual presentation ceremony is Wednesday, May 6th at 7pm at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. We would appreciate any of you who are able to attend the event. It's a worthwhile and cool program to attend!

A Family Connection
The true story of an Irish family, new to America and prosperous, all killed for the greed of one man. The largest mass homicide in Philadelphia’s history, 1866, and told like never before. This fictional novel brings not only historical information to life, but also the memory of a family that should never be forgotten. An entire city shaken to its foundations, shocked, dismayed, and forever changed by one horrible deed.

Background on the book…
Based on true events, the novel follows the story of the largest mass homicide in Philadelphia’s city history. The Deerings, prosperous farmers in the southern section of Philadelphia, also known as Philadelphia’s first ward, are subject to the changing America of 1866.
With the Civil War over at last, and the nation getting back to its feet, the Irish immigrants are one family of few that have escaped the bloody war unscathed. Yet they are met by an unseen enemy, indeed a person thought to be a friend, thought to be family. This loving family would become a part of American History, of Irish history, and most of all Philadelphia history as the tragedy of their story would shake their city and their nation to its very foundations, so shocking, so sudden, after the worst time in America’s great history. 8 members of the Deering family, all murdered on one horrific day, by one man, for reasons unknown. One survivor of this tragedy, William Deering, from 1866, has now today over 80 immediate family members alone, who still live in and about the city. This book based on true events gives insight into the mind of a murderer, but more importantly, into the lives of an American family that should never be forgotten. Follow along as the Deerings live in a time of unknown and untold adventures, that leads to a dramatic, untimely ending. The Philadelphia First Ward Horror, written by G. Jordan Lyons, current student of the University of Indianapolis, is due to be published and for sale to the public by the spring of this year. Be sure to support Indianapolis’ own young new author as this piece of historical fiction is the first of many novels to come.
